US Election 2024: Why did Kamala Harris fail to win and did the Democrats lose their way? | Newstalk
Pat Kenny is joined in studio by Larry Donnelly (Law Lecturer at University of Galway) to discuss Donald Trump's victory in the race to become America's next president, why Kamala Harris didn't garner more widespread support, and has the Democratic party lost its way.
Donald Trump has promised a “golden age of America” after declaring victory in the US Presidential Election.
The Republican candidate has racked up victories in key swing states across the country and is forecast to win over 300 electoral votes.
Addressing a crowd of supporters, who shouted “USA, USA, USA” as he appeared, Mr Trump declared his Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement to be the “greatest political movement of all time”.
“We’re going to help our country heal,” he promised.
Mr Trump said the people of the United States had given him an “unprecedented and powerful mandate” to change the country.
“We have taken back control of the Senate - wow that’s good,” he said.
He also singled out Tesla and X owner, Elon Musk, who has been an enthusiastic supporter of his campaign.
"We have a new star - a star is born, Elon,” Mr Trump said.
"He is an amazing guy; we were sitting together tonight. He spent two weeks in Philadelphia and different parts of Pennsylvania campaigning.”
Addressing the crowd, Mr Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, described their forecast victory as the “greatest political comeback in the history of the United States of America”.
"Under President Trump's leadership, we're never going to stop fighting for you, for your dreams, for the future of your children,” he said.
He went on to claim that, “after the greatest political comeback in American history, we're going to lead the greatest economic comeback in American history - under Donald Trump's leadership."
Vice President Kamala Harris has sent her supporters home and will not speak tonight.

What is the geopolitical significance of the Philippines?
The second most populous country in Southeast Asia, the Philippines is caught up in the intensifying competition between the US and China. Its location means it plays an important role in regional security affairs such as the South China Sea territorial dispute, as well as the economics of changing trade routes and supply chains.
The US, the Philippines’ most important security partner, likely sees it as a springboard from which containment of China can be launched. As the fifth most mineralized country in the world, the US might also be looking to the Philippines as a source of raw materials in the event of a decoupling from China.
China’s role is likely that of a security spoiler: seeking to deprive the US of an important base of operations. It is already the Philippines’ top trading partner, accounting for 16% of its exports, and 39% of its imports. Chinese tourists contribute greatly to the Philippines’ tourism industry.
The Philippines is not likely to want to choose sides. But it may soon be asked to do so: and who it chooses will be of great importance to regional, and indeed world, geopolitics.

Gavin Adcock is a 25-year-old Georgia native-born and raised in Watkinsville. Former Georgia Southern University football player, Gavin grew up working on his family cattle farm and dreamed of riding bulls in the PBR. He started writing songs in high school, but it wasn’t until the Spring of 2021, when he tore up his knee playing football, that he used his time healing to record and release his first original single. Since then, he has put all focus into his music and has released multiple singles that now have amassed more than hundreds of millions of streams collectively.
