He lived in Spencer, Wisconsin, and graduated from the University of Missouri majoring in agricultural journalism. He was catapulted into country music fame in 1956 with his composition "The Auctioneer", co-written with Buddy Black, which sold over 2.5 million records. He wrote the song about the life of his cousin, National Auctioneers Association Hall of Famer Ray Sims, also a Missourian. Van Dyke had the lead role of a budding country music performer in the 1967 movie What Am I Bid?, in which Sims played himself as an auctioneer.<br /><br />In his 50 years-plus career, Van Dyke has recorded more than 500 songs, dozens of them making the charts. His record of "Walk On By" (1961) was named by Billboard magazine in 1994 as the biggest country single of all time, based on sales, plays and weeks in the charts.[citation needed] It stayed at number one in the U.S. country chart for 19 weeks, and in all, charted for 42 weeks, also reaching No. 5 on the pop listings. It sold more than 1.5 million copies.<br /><br />In the UK Singles Chart Van Dyke had two hits: "Walk On By" reached No. 5 in February 1962, and "Big Man in a Big House" made No. 34 in May that year.<br /><br />Lonnie Melvin "Mel" Tillis is an American country music singer and songwriter. Although he recorded songs since the late 1950s, his biggest success occurred in the 1970s, with a long list of Top 10 hits.<br /><br />Tillis's biggest hits include "I Ain't Never", "Good Woman Blues", and "Coca-Cola Cowboy". On February 13, 2012, President Barack Obama awarded Tillis the National Medal of Arts for his contributions to country music. He also has won the CMA Awards' most coveted award, Entertainer of the Year. He is also known for his speech impediment, which does not affect his singing voice. Tillis' biggest hits include "I Ain't Never", "Good Woman Blues", and "Coca-Cola Cowboy".<br /><br />In 1976, he was awarded Entertainer of the Year at Country Music Association Awards' before being inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame later that year. In 2012 he was awarded the National Medal of Arts for his contributions to country music by President Barack Obama.<br /><br />Tillis achieved chart-topping success with more than three dozen Top 10 hits and recorded more than 60 albums throughout his career. This included Top 10 country hits, "These Lonely Hands of Mine" and "She'll Be Hanging Around Somewhere" and a Top 5 with "Heart Over Mind", which peaked at No. 3 on the Hot Country Songs list in 1970.<br /><br />In 1972, Tillis achieved his first chart-topper with his version of his song "I Ain't Never" originally sung by Webb Pierce. Tills achieved most of his success under MGM Records with records such as "Heaven Everyday" (1970), "Commercial Affection" (1970), "Arms of a Fool" (1970), "Take My Hand" (a duet with Sherry Bryce in 1971), and "Brand New Mister Me" (1971). His biggest success with MCA Records started with a pair No. 1 hits in 1976, "Good Woman Blues" and "Heart Healer". In addition to the close No. 1, "Neon Rose" reaching No. 3 and "Sawmill", which reached No. 2 on the US Country Chart. Other hits Tillis had on MGM include "Stomp Them Grapes" (1974), "Memory Maker" (1974), "Woman in the Back of My Mind" (1975), and his version of "Mental Revenge" (1976). He achieved another No. 1 in 1978 with "I Believe In You" and once more in 1979 with "Coca-Cola Cowboy".<br /><br />Before Mel found fame he worked for the United States Air Force, end even spent time working on the railroad. A spokesman for Tillis, Don Murry Grubbs, said Tillis died early Sunday at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Florida. He was 85. Grubbs said Tillis battled intestinal issues since 2016 and never fully recovered. The suspected cause of death is respiratory failure. <br />
