Yesterday i covered an upcoming indie game called family time, but since the game was announced it’s actually gotten some backlash online. So why do people hate it? Let me explain.

So family time if you haven’t seen it yet is an indie sandbox game where you look after your wife and children.

The first reason people didn’t like it is because of the goon slop allegations. On sites like twitter alot of people said the game was goon slop, mainly because of the wolf mama. They said she was designed specifically as fan service, or to clip farm.

Honestly i don’t really understand this criticism, the game doesn’t contain any nsfw content at all and is pretty wholesome overall. It’s okay to have attractive characters in video games.

The second critique relates to ai content. So in the game’s store page at the bottom it says, AI was used for creating concept art, prototype textures, and quick mesh tests that are eventually replaced with real artist graphic designs and hand-tailored models.

When asked about this over on twitter, The developer actually responded. They said that they made all models from scratch in blender, but they used ai to concept models to help visualise them.

In another post they asked to commission artists to help turn ai slop concept art into real game assets.

So basically the ai stuff was only for early concept art, they’re getting real artists to help.

Personally i think it’s a nice change of pace that the developer was upfront about the ai usage. They explained where it was used, and then put effort in to replace it. It’s a big relief that it didn’t turn into a mighty mike plays situation.
