The waves were non stop, my seasickness made me "suka" twice, but seven hours later... it was all worth it!

WELCOME TO CALAYAN ISLAND.

This island is one of some of the most remote islands here in Northern Luzon. If you don't take the small plane, the journey can be difficult... but as you will see in this video... certainly worth it! I took the boat for about 7 hours to the main island of Calayan. After connecting with the local community and exploring the town, I found myself hiking with a guide along some of the most powerful coastlines you can experience in the Philippines. There is an incredible beach cove as well called "Sibang"... which has powdery white sand, and stunning turquoise waters!

These remote islands in Luzon are certainly incredible...

What is the geopolitical significance of the Philippines?

The second most populous country in Southeast Asia, the Philippines is caught up in the intensifying competition between the US and China. Its location means it plays an important role in regional security affairs such as the South China Sea territorial dispute, as well as the economics of changing trade routes and supply chains.

The US, the Philippines’ most important security partner, likely sees it as a springboard from which containment of China can be launched. As the fifth most mineralized country in the world, the US might also be looking to the Philippines as a source of raw materials in the event of a decoupling from China.

China’s role is likely that of a security spoiler: seeking to deprive the US of an important base of operations. It is already the Philippines’ top trading partner, accounting for 16% of its exports, and 39% of its imports. Chinese tourists contribute greatly to the Philippines’ tourism industry.

The Philippines is not likely to want to choose sides. But it may soon be asked to do so: and who it chooses will be of great importance to regional, and indeed world, geopolitics.

According to Oxfam, inequality is rising in Asia. The richest 10% of Asians capture 60% - 77% of national income. The poorest half? Just 12% - 15%.

The Philippines is one of the most unequal countries in Asia. While the archipelago is aiming to become a middle-class society free of poverty by 2040, its top 1% of earners still capture nearly one fifth of the national income. The bottom half shares just 14 per cent.

For Filipino youths, inequality starts even before they are born and continues to influence their whole life. Deep-rooted social stratification shaped by class forms structural barriers in access to quality education and land ownership. Now, many struggle to move up the social ladder.

Inequality was exacerbated by COVID-19. Although the Philippines is healing, the recovery has been uneven. The wealthy class are getting richer post-COVID. The poor, who suffered the most during the pandemic, are struggling with the rising cost of living.
