Frank Bruno vs James Tillis in a ten round non-title heavyweight bout

Date: March 24, 1987

Venue: Wembley Arena, London

Bruno stance: orthodox

Tillis stance: orthodox

Frank Bruno got his first shot at a world title when he challenged Tim Witherspoon for the WBA belt in 1986. After a promising start, Bruno faded late in the fight, and was stopped in the eleventh. Bruno then took eight months off.

James Tillis also challenged for the WBA title, losing on points to Mike Weaver in 1981. Since then, he had lost most of his fights with contenders, including Pinklon Thomas, Greg Page and Tim Witherspoon. Tillis had given a good account of himself against Mike Tyson in 1986, with some observers believing he should have been given the win that night. His record was 36-11-1, and was clearly past his best, but still capable of giving a stern test to any heavyweight who underestimated him.

For an in depth look at their respective records, visit:

Frank Bruno - https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/505

James Tillis - https://boxrec.com/en/box-pro/803
