This video explains Shorโ€™s Algorithm, a way to efficiently factor large pseudoprime integers into their prime factors using a quantum computer. The quantum computation relies on the number-theoretic analysis of the factoring problem via modular arithmetic mod N (where N is the number to be factored), and finding the order or period of a random coprime number mod N. The exponential speedup comes in part from the use of the quantum fast fourier transform which achieves interference among frequencies that are not related to the period (period-finding is the goal of the QFT FFT).

Quantum computers arenโ€™t the next generation of supercomputersโ€”theyโ€™re something else entirely. Before we can even begin to talk about their potential applications, we need to understand the fundamental physics that drives the theory of quantum computing. (Featuring Scott Aaronson, John Preskill, and Dorit Aharonov.)

Do you ever wonder how do computers actually work? In this video, I'll give you an oversimplified explanation of how computers are able to both store and compute information using transistors.

Hereโ€™s a bit more in-depth explanation of some of the ideas simplified in the video:
- In addition to storing and computing information, computers are generally also considered to need to handle inputs and outputs (otherwise there would be nowhere to get that information from or to send the result of computations).
- Transistors act as on/off switches, controlling the flow of electrical signals that represent information.
- Each bit of Random Access Memory (RAM) is typically stored in a memory cell consisting of a capacitor and a transistor. The capacitor holds a charge that represents a 1 or a 0, and the transistor controls the flow of current to the capacitor. This construction is known as Dynamic RAM (DRAM).
- There are however other types of RAM with different constructions and trade-offs. Most notably, Static RAM (SRAM) usually uses a flip-flop circuit for each bit, which typically requires ~6 transistors per bit and is generally more expensive to produce.
- While transistors are a fundamental building block of logic gates, which are the basic building blocks of computer circuits, there are also other potential electronic components involved in those circuits such as capacitors and resistors, depending on the specific gate.

In this video, weโ€™ll be discussing the evolution of computing โ€“ more specifically, the evolution of the technologies that have brought upon the modern computing era.

00:00 Intro

[0:30-5:33] Origins of Computing - Starting off we'll look at, the origins of computing from as far back as 3000 BC with the abacus and progressing to discuss some of the first mechanical computers. After this, we'll get to see the first signs of modern computing emerge, through the use of electromechanical relays in computers along with punched cards for data I/O.

[5:33-8:36] 1st Generation of Computing - Following that we'll discuss, the 1st generation of modern computing, the vacuum tube era. The first technology that was fully digital and resembled how modern computers operate.

[8:36-10:49] 2nd Generation of Computing - Afterwards we'll discuss, the 2nd generation of modern computing, the transistor era. The transistor miniaturized the vacuum tube and was much more efficient in terms of speed, power consumption, heat and more. It is the core technology behind how all computers operate today.

[10:49-13:04] 3rd Generation of Computing - To conclude we'll discuss, the 3rd generation of modern computing, the integrated circuit era. The integrated circuit was able to pack many transistors onto a single chip and is behind the exponential growth of modern technology.
