Israel Defense and Security Forum Head of Research Or Yissachar says Hamas is perhaps beginning to regret its “very audacious, one bridge too far action”.

“But we’re also seeing the Iranian fingerprints all over this,” he told Sky News Australia.

Mr Yissachar said Israel is shocked, but it’s “preparing for war” following the surprise attacks by Hamas.

Israeli warplanes are pounding the Gaza Strip as the death toll from both sides rises above 1500 people.

Israel has responded to the attacks by Hamas with a “complete siege” on Gaza as it vows to respond with a force “like never before”.

The war on Israel has passed 48 hours and the shock of the Hamas terrorist attacks have shaken lives across the globe and caused the "darkest day for Jewish people in decades", according to Sky News Australia host Sharri Markson.

Ms Markson has condemned the “sickening” acts committed by the “degenerate evil” of Hamas.

“It's being called Israel's September 11 … it is pure savagery,” she said.

“But it's the heinous barbarity that makes this attack by Hamas so sickening and so unexpected for the state of Israel that prides itself on national security.

“There was no mercy shown as the elderly, the women, the children – the babies – were kidnapped, seized and carted off by jeering men – away from the safety of their homes, their loved ones and their life as they knew it.

“How can humans be this cruel? To laugh and celebrate as they torture terrified, young souls who had so much ahead of them in life, who were so hopeful for the future.”

(AP) Backed by a barrage of rockets, dozens of Hamas militants broke out of the blockaded Gaza Strip and into nearby Israeli towns, killing dozens and abducting others in an unprecedented surprise early morning attack during a major Jewish holiday Saturday. A stunned Israel launched airstrikes in Gaza, with its prime minister saying the country is now at war with Hamas and vowing to inflict an “unprecedented price.”

In an assault of startling breadth, Hamas gunmen rolled into as many as 22 locations outside the Gaza Strip, including towns and other communities as far as 15 miles (24 kilometers) from the Gaza border. In some places, they roamed for hours, gunning down civilians and soldiers as Israel’s military scrambled to muster a response. Gunbattles continued well after nightfall, and militants held hostages in standoffs in two towns and occupied a police station in a third. Israeli media, citing rescue service officials, said at least 250 people were killed and 1,500 wounded, making it the deadliest attack in Israel in decades. At least 232 people in the Gaza Strip have been killed and at least 1,700 wounded in Israeli strikes, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. Hamas fighters took an unknown number of civilians and soldiers captive into Gaza, a deeply sensitive issue for Israel, in harrowing scenes posted on social media videos.

VIDEO released by the Israeli army on Sunday (October 8) showed what is said to be the targeting of Palestinians along the Israel-Gaza border fence. The army said the video showed operations over the past 24 hours.

Israeli forces clashed with gunmen from the Palestinian group Hamas on Sunday, 24 hours after the militants launched a surprise attack on Israel in which about 500 people were killed in the deadliest day of violence in Israel for 50 years.

Hamas fighters began their attack at dawn on Saturday with a huge barrage of rockets into southern Israel, giving cover to an unprecedented, multi-pronged infiltration of fighters into Israel from Gaza, a narrow strip that is home to 2.3 million Palestinians.

A 27-year-old Israeli woman was killed “execution style” while playing dead in hopes of being spared by Hamas gunmen who invaded a trance music festival near the border with the Gaza Strip and massacred scores of partygoers on Saturday.

Ma’ayan Adam, 36, a television host who appeared on Israel’s version of “Dancing With The Stars” and anchors a news program on one of the country’s popular TV stations, posted a heartbreaking message to her 300,000 Instagram followers announcing the death of her 27-year-old sister, Mapal Adam.

According to her sister, Mapal Adam was killed while being held by her boyfriend, who suffered gunshot wounds to the back.

He is reportedly expected to survive.

“On Saturday afternoon, in this idyllic setting, Mapal, our baby, hid underneath a truck and pretended as if she were dead,” Ma’ayan Adam wrote in a message on Instagram that included a photo of her sister’s cell phone.
