The 2024 WNBA Expansion Draft is here! Our host make their picks for the Golden State Valkyries, the exciting new WNBA expansion team. They believe Hayley Jones from the Atlanta Dream, Lindsay Allen from the Chicago Sky, and Veronica Burton from the Connecticut Sun would be key players to build the team around. For the Valkyries, Travis and Ountae decide to pass on a pick from the Las Vegas Aces, but they believe Li Yueru from the LA Sparks and Alissa Pili from the Minnesota Lynx would be excellent choices. Kayla Thornton from the New York Liberty, Celeste Taylor from the Phoenix Mercury, Mackenzie Holmes from the Seattle Storm, and Brittney Sykes from the Washington Mystics round out their picks for the expansion team.

The Golden State Valkyries made a strong debut, seizing the opportunity to draft Temi Fagbenle, a dominant defensive presence, from the Fever. While fans are expressing their frustration with the team's management, superstar Caitlin Clark has remained noticeably silent on the matter.

Clark did, however, take to Instagram to celebrate her close friend, Kate Martin, who was also selected by the Valkyries. Re-sharing the Valkyries' announcement about Martin, Clark cheered, "Let’s go Kater!!!!" But she didn’t offer similar praise for Fagbenle. Clark and Martin’s bond, which began during their time at Iowa, remains intact, even as they now face each other as rivals in the WNBA.

The anger among Fever fans is palpable, especially regarding the decision to leave Fagbenle unprotected. The versatile center, known for her strong defense and scoring ability, averaged 6.4 points and 4.7 rebounds last season, while shooting an impressive 50.9%. At 32, Fagbenle has accumulated 237 career rebounds and 34 blocks, making her a significant loss for the Fever.

Caitlin Clark has had her fair share of foes. But she's shutting them all down.

Will Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael be able to form a Government with just independents? Or even on their own? Anton Savage, Sean Defoe, Ivan Yates, Conor Lenihan and Lynn Boylan discuss the likelihood.

#ireland #news #election2024

The incoming Fine Gael line-up changes the “shape and colour of Irish politics”, Ivan Yates has said.

You can keep up to date with all the General Election results throughout the weekend through Newstalk’s live blog and video stream.

Former Fine Gael TD and broadcaster Ivan Yates told Newstalk that approximately 60 new TDs shows an “intergenerational change”.

“Clearly Fine Gael, with the number of retirees, is transformed from your Leos and Simons, like Pascal is kind of last man standing,” Mr Yates said.

“So, that is an intergenerational change.

“You're going to see a whole raft of new TDs - Fine Gael will be unrecognisable.

“You can see in relation to Sinn Fein, they will have new personnel and so on.

“It really is a change - we're going to have 60 new TDs… the shape and the colour of Irish politics is going to change.”

Mr Yates said the “timing just isn’t suitable” for Micheál Martin to run for President but he thinks the outgoing Tánaiste will not contest a fifth election as Fianna Fáil leader.

“The first time he really appointed a deputy leader was Jack Chambers and there are the signs that Cork has done very well for Fianna Fáil, that you're coming into the Chambers era, maybe Darragh [O’Brien], but I think you're going to see a resurgence of Fianna Fáil in Dublin,” he said.

The Journal.ie editor Sinead O’Carroll agreed with Mr Yates’ comments that Micheál Martin is the leader people want.

She said that she believes the split campaign for Fine Gael has helped Fianna Fáil gain seats.

“[Fine Gael] were trying to talk about new energy and new faces and a refresh but then also trying to tell people you want stability in a world that's gone mad,” she said.

“It was kind of a tale of two campaigns.

“There was kind of a request for stability and I think that's where Micheál Martin, even though we are going to get a host of new Fianna Fáil TDs, people kind of enjoyed and liked Micheál Martin's brand.

“The only message [we] really we heard from him over the debates is, ‘I led the country through Covid, and didn't I do an okay job?’”

Newstalk reporters will be at count centres around Ireland bringing you all the results as they come in.

We will also be running election specials throughout the day, and you can follow all the action on our live blog and on our social channels.
