He lived in Spencer, Wisconsin, and graduated from the University of Missouri majoring in agricultural journalism. He was catapulted into country music fame in 1956 with his composition "The Auctioneer", co-written with Buddy Black, which sold over 2.5 million records. He wrote the song about the life of his cousin, National Auctioneers Association Hall of Famer Ray Sims, also a Missourian. Although he recorded songs since the late 1950s, his biggest success occurred in the 1970s, with a long list of Top 10 hits.<br /><br />Tillis's biggest hits include "I Ain't Never", "Good Woman Blues", and "Coca-Cola Cowboy". On February 13, 2012, President Barack Obama awarded Tillis the National Medal of Arts for his contributions to country music. He also has won the CMA Awards' most coveted award, Entertainer of the Year. He is also known for his speech impediment, which does not affect his singing voice. His daughter is country music singer Pam Tillis.<br /><br />This performance was recorded live at Church Street Station in Orlando, Florida.

Tom Jones, aged 80, spoke with the Daily Express, revealing he will no longer sing his hit song “She’s A Lady” during performances. Released in 1971, “She’s A Lady” was one of his best-selling hits. Jones explained that certain lyrics in the song, such as “She always knows her place,” do not align with contemporary values and thus, the song “doesn’t sit right anymore.” Despite its popularity, Jones feels that “She’s A Lady” is not suitable for today’s audience.

Paul Anka, in his 2013 autobiography “My Way: An Autobiography,” recounted writing the song “She’s a Lady” for Tom Jones. Anka described the writing process as putting himself in Jones’ shoes, adopting a “Method actor” approach to capture Jones’ persona. He admitted that the song’s tone was brash and politically incorrect but felt it suited Jones’ image. Despite its success, Anka personally disliked “She’s a Lady,” considering it too chauvinistic for his taste. Anka wrote the song during a TWA flight from London to New York, completing the lyrics swiftly, followed by the melody in about an hour and a half.
“She’s a Lady” peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Jones’ highest-charting single in the United States, and remained on the chart for 14 weeks.
