Let me be straight with you, Thailand is changing, and not in the way most people imagine. I’ve been living here for years, watching the highs, the chaos, and now the painful decline. Sitting in Pattaya, I see it every day—in the streets, in the bars, and in the way locals look at tourists.

The Tourism Ministry predicted 39 - 41 million visitors for 2025. The reality? Barely 20 million by August, with the year likely to finish closer to 33 million. Meanwhile, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia are hitting record highs.

So what’s going wrong? Prices are up, value is down, and the old cheap paradise image no longer matches reality:

- Strong baht + high inflation = your money doesn’t stretch.
- ATM fees: 250 baht (almost $8) per withdrawal.
- Beers in Bangkok bars costing more than New York or London.
- Dual pricing and tourist markups that leave visitors feeling scammed.

It’s not just about money, it’s about trust. Tourists feel like walking ATMs. Locals chase quick cash instead of building relationships. The result? Fewer Western visitors, declining vibes in Pattaya, and more people choosing Vietnam or Cambodia instead.

But it’s not all bad news. For expats and long-term visitors, there are opportunities: cheaper rentals, less crowded attractions, and businesses that are trying harder to deliver real service. Still, the big question remains: what does Thailand want to be? A luxury destination? Or the affordable paradise it once was?
