Hamas militants broke through the border fence between Israel and the Gaza Strip on the morning on 7 October. More than 1,000 Israelis were killed during the incursion, and a similar number have since been killed in Gaza as Israel continues to launch retaliatory airstrikes. Binyamin Netanyahu has declared Israel is “at war” after Hamas militants launched a surprise attack from Gaza during a Jewish holiday, with thousands of rockets and armed fighters sent across the border to Israel.
The Israeli prime minister ordered the army to retaliate against the group as he mobilised reserve forces. He vowed that “the enemy will pay a price he has never known”. The Israeli military has already launched airstrikes on targets in Gaza, with witnesses reporting hearing heavy explosions.

Dozens of bodies have been found at the site of an outdoor music festival n an Israeli community near Gaza, according to Israeli media, after it was attacked by Hamas fighters as part of their unprecedented incursion into Israel on Saturday. Images on social media showed young people attempting to flee the festival by foot or in cars as the militants attacked, amid reports some had been taken hostage.

Israeli forces clashed with gunmen from the Palestinian group Hamas on Sunday, 24 hours after the militants launched a surprise attack on Israel in which about 500 people were killed in the deadliest day of violence in Israel for 50 years.
Hamas fighters began their attack at dawn on Saturday with a huge barrage of rockets into southern Israel, giving cover to an unprecedented, multi-pronged infiltration of fighters into Israel from Gaza, a narrow strip that is home to 2.3 million Palestinians.
