When the Awhazov family walked back to their house on Saturday morning after being called away to an air raid shelter they assumed the worst was over.
But shortly afterwards someone rang the doorbell of their home, in the southern Israeli town of Ofakim.
George Awhazov looked at the intercom screen and was confronted by two men in camouflage: one of them tugged at the door handle, the other, with a rocket launcher on his shoulder, looked around cautiously.
“I heard some noise outside and went to the intercom when I heard the doorbell. I looked at it and saw a guy with an RPG (rocket-propelled grenade launcher). The only time I ever saw an RPG was in computer games.”
The 23-year-old, wisely, did not open the door. He had come within a whisker of being kidnapped.
Over a dozen towns and villages in southern Israel were overrun by Hamas fighters on Saturday as they shot residents in the streets and grabbed others to take them to Gaza.

Les forces armées du Hamas ont lancé une attaque d’ampleur ce samedi 7 octobre de la bande de Gaza, un territoire sous leur contrôle depuis 2007.
Le groupe islamiste a annoncé avoir tiré plus de 5 000 roquettes contre Israël. Plusieurs images montrent également l’arrivée massive de combattants du Hamas sur le territoire israélien. Certains d’entre eux ont même réussi à s’infiltrer dans plusieurs villes situées à la frontière avec la bande de Gaza, procédant parfois à des prises d’otage de civils et de militaires. Israël a riposté en bombardant la bande de Gaza.
En fin de journée, les services de secours israéliens déploraient 100 morts tandis que les autorités font état de plus de 900 blessés. Le bilan est pour l’instant plus lourd côté palestinien où 200 personnes sont mortes sous les frappes aériennes.

Footage from Gaza revealed flattened buildings in the aftermath of Israeli strikes. The strikes occurred after the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, vowed to retaliate following a land and air assault by Hamas fighters on Saturday. Militants were observed pouring into Israel through a breached border fence and using motorised paragliders, launching attacks on several Israeli cities.
In an escalatory move, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for missiles fired into northern Israel, asserting that the action was carried out in solidarity with Hamas.

Hamas gunmen have killed around 250 people who attended an outdoor music festival in Israel's Negev Desert, according to a spokesperson for Israeli humanitarian NGO Zaka. The ruling Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip carried out an unprecedented, multi-front attack on Israel at daybreak Saturday, firing thousands of rockets as dozens of Hamas fighters infiltrated the heavily fortified border in several locations by air, land and sea and catching the country off-guard on a major holiday.
Six hours after the invasion began, Hamas militants were still fighting gun battles inside several Israeli communities in a surprising show of strength that shook the country. Israel’s national rescue service said at least 22 people have been killed and hundreds wounded, making it the deadliest attack in Israel in years.

Osama Hamadan, senior spokesperson of Hamas, has told Al Jazeera, that they are not attacking civilians.
Rights groups like Amnesty International, have pointed out that Israeli civilians had been killed by Hamas.
“You have to differentiate between settlers and civilians. Settlers attacked Palestinians…We hope that Amnesty has international humility to send us more developed weapons to attack just only the soldiers,” Hamdan said.
Asked whether civilians in southern Israel were also considered settlers, Hamdan said: “Everyone knows there are settlements there.”
“We are not targeting civilians on purpose. We have declared settlers are part of the occupation and part of the armed Israeli force. They are not civilians,” he added.
Hamas’s operation came on the heels of the killing of widespread Israeli settler attacks, increased tensions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem and a record number of Palestinians killed.
