This is the story of how a lonely delivery driver from Detroit became another statistic in the Philippines retirement scam epidemic. No one forced him to wire the money. No one held a gun to his head. He did it all willingly, desperately, because he wanted so badly to believe that someone finally valued me.
In this video, he's sharing every painful detail: how he met his Filipina wife, Liza, how the requests started small and grew, how he ignored every warning sign, and how he ended up broke at 62 with nothing to show for three years except expensive lessons about trust, loneliness, and desperation.
🚨 What You'll Learn:
- How retirement scams targeting Western men actually work in the Philippines
- The exact progression from "girlfriend" to financial disaster
- Why I ignored obvious red flags (and how you can avoid doing the same)
- The real cost of building a house in the Philippines as a foreigner
- How monthly "allowances" can drain your retirement savings
- Why failed business ventures are a common part of these scams
- What happens when you run out of money and she's done with you
- How the U.S. Embassy handles broke Americans abroad (repatriation loans explained)
- What it's like starting over at 62 after losing everything

At least 90 people have been killed while hundreds of thousands fled their homes as one of strongest typhoons this year ripped through the central Philippines, authorities say.
Typhoon Kalmaegi has flooded entire towns on the most populated central island of Cebu, where at least 49 of the fatalities were located.
Videos show people sheltering on rooftops, while cars and shipping containers have been swept through the streets.
The official death toll, which is likely to rise, includes six crew members of a military helicopter that crashed on Mindanao island, south of Cebu, after it was deployed to assist in relief efforts.

For decades, millions of Filipinos powered the global gig and outsourcing economy. But the system that made it work may be breaking faster than anyone expected. ASIAN BOSS explores why this model is now under pressure—especially as AI enters the picture.
Livestream guest submission: https://forms.gle/4AJo154Ho6fX5dDM7
We’re experimenting with a separate livestream format to hear directly from people with lived experience across Asia. The goal is to strengthen our fact-checking and gather perspectives that can inform and shape future episodes. If you have meaningful, first-hand insight into an industry in any Asian country and feel it could add important context and depth to our reporting, you can submit your information through the form above. We’ll reach out if it’s a good fit for a future livestream topic. Too often, mainstream narratives about Asia are shaped without hearing directly from the people who live and work there. This is a chance to help ensure those perspectives are part of the global conversation. And if you know someone with insight worth sharing, feel free to pass this along to them as well.

China claims almost all of the South China Sea, including the Second Thomas Shoal. Several Southeast Asian states have made conflicting and sometimes overlapping claims in the South China Sea. Beijing rejected a 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague that said that China's claims did not have any basis under international law. In July, China and the Philippines reached a "provisional arrangement" aimed at ending maritime confrontations near the Second Thomas Shoal, allowing Manila to resupply the atoll. The Philippines deliberately ran aground the Sierra Madre ship on the Second Tomas Shoal in 1999 in order to assert Manila's sovereignty over the area. Filipino troops are stationed on the shipwreck and require regular resupply.

Did you know the Philippines was invaded by these countries?
Number 1
Spain. In 1565, Spain colonized the Philippines and ruled for over 300 years, until they lost the islands to the U.S. in 1898.
Number 2
Great Britain. In 1762, Britain briefly occupied Manila and Cavite. They left in 1764 after a peace treaty, and Spain took back control.
Number 3
United States. In 1898, after defeating Spain, the U.S. acquired the Philippines through the Treaty of Paris for $20 million. They remained in control until granting full independence in 1946.
Number 4
Japan. In 1942, during WWII, Japan occupied the Philippines. Filipino and American forces later fought side by side until Japan surrendered in 1945.
