Thousands of US marines are heading for the Middle East, along with the USS Tripoli, an amphibious assault ship, according to senior US officials.
The task force is made up of around 5,000 troops, about half of them marines. The force is trained in specialist amphibious operations, including landings and securing maritime positions. The plan has not yes been publicly announced by the White House but is being briefed by senior US officials.
It comes as Iran is attacking shipping in the Strait of Hormuz - closing the key sea lane through which ships usually carry much of the world’s oil and natural gas supplies.
Fuel prices have surged since the start of the war, as Iran blocks the Strait and attacks tankers, as well as oil refineries and other installations in neighbouring countries that are allies of the US.
President Trump has promised to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, in what has become a key economic battleground in the war. He has said Iran will be “hit very hard” over the coming week.
Meanwhile the Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the US would continue to target Iran's leadership and claimed that the country's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is in hiding, “wounded” and “likely disfigured”.
In Iran, thousands of supporters of the regime have been taking part in mass rallies in the capital Tehran to mark Quds Day, an annual pro-Palestinian event.
Israel has been carrying out further attacks in southern Lebanon, against what it says are Hezbollah fighters supported by Iran.

The US military said it has completed a "heavy wave" of strikes against Iran in retaliation for Tuesday's attempted ballistic missile attacks on American forces.
Iran has responded by continuing attacks across the region. Jordan said it shot down five Iranian missiles, while Kuwait reports one person was killed in an Iranian strike.
The conflict is now pulling in more countries. This week saw the first publicly announced joint US-Saudi strikes against Iranian proxies in Iraq. Egypt has also blamed a drone attack for a fire on two ships, marking the first time it has been targeted since the war began five months ago.

US President Donald Trump has announced he will scale back US military exercises with South Korea, writing on Truth Social that he is “not happy” with the joint drills and that they send the “wrong signal” to North Korea.
He cited his “very good relationship” with Kim Jong-un and asked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to “substantially reduce” the exercises, which are due to start on Monday.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, former CIA officer and US Navy veteran Scott Uehlinger said he was “a little surprised at the timing” but that the move has been developing for almost a year.
He said the Iran issue is “just a symptom of a larger problem” — South Korea's “overly friendly” policies towards China, which he says have alarmed other US allies including Japan, the Philippines and Australia.
Uehlinger described Trump's move as “a subtle way” of “mildly scolding South Korea” and urging it to reconsider its China policy.

The US announced a host of sanctions against Iran and threatened its supporters in what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said was "the single greatest financial offensive ever".
Labelling it an "economic D-Day" for Iran, Bessent said the US would sever all economic ties with the country and added that any nation financially partnering with Iran would also be isolated.
However, the latest threat to the Iranian regime follows several U-turns and extended deadlines from the White House in its efforts to end the conflict.
The war has led to hikes in global oil prices, and in response to the latest threat Iran warned it would shut down all oil exports from the region if the war continued.

US President Donald Trump has told the United Nations General Assembly he faces a "big decision" on whether to strike Iran again or pursue a peace deal.
A single member of Iran's delegation watched on during the president's speech in New York, in which he said he could "annihilate" the Islamic Republic if the conflict went unresolved.
Trump later told reporters that American officials had had a "very productive" three-hour meeting with the Iranian delegation on the sidelines of the general assembly.
Iran state TV confirmed that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had met US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, although there was no comment from officials in Tehran.

In a major diplomatic escalation following the conclusion of the joint U.S.-Israeli military campaign 'Operation Epic Fury,' U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has issued a bold warning to Iran's new Supreme Leader, outlining the Trump administration's aggressive next phase of geopolitical strategy. This comes alongside the Treasury Department's newly launched 'Operation Economic Outcast'—an unprecedented financial offensive spearheaded by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to completely isolate Tehran by targeting five vital sectors of its economy: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. Reaffirming Washington's stance after high-level discussions with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Secretary Rubio emphasized that the United States and its global partners remain fully committed to preserving the freedom of navigation in the critical Strait of Hormuz. Two people have been wounded in a shooting near the White House, including a suspect and possible bystander, law enforcement sources tell the BBC's US partner CBS News.
It appears a person shot at Secret Service agents unsuccessfully, and the agents returned fire, the sources say.
FBI director Kash Patel says the Secret Service is currently responding to the incident.
