A dramatic and emotional confrontation unfolded during a congressional hearing as Pat Ryan — an Army veteran — sharply criticized Pete Hegseth over casualties in the ongoing Iran war.

Ryan accused the Pentagon leadership of failing to adequately protect U.S. troops, pointing to deadly incidents including a drone attack that killed American service members stationed near Iran.

In a tense exchange, Ryan demanded accountability, telling Hegseth to “stop lying” and calling for his resignation. The moment reflects growing frustration among lawmakers over troop safety, war strategy, and the rising human cost of the conflict.

The broader hearing saw intense questioning from multiple lawmakers, as concerns mount over how the war is being managed and whether leadership decisions have put lives at risk.

After Prime Minister Mark Carney told the New York Times he examined the possibility of a U.S. invasion of Canada, some Canadians felt rattled about the very idea. One senior U.S. military official described the scenario as 'preposterous.'

Canadians are giving the United States the "silent treatment" amid the ongoing trade war and rhetoric from the Trump administration, says Christopher Sands of Johns Hopkins University.

"Canadians are not crossing the border," he told Compass Points host Nick Schifrin. "They're boycotting our products. A lot of people aren't taking vacations or coming to see sporting events in the United States."

Sands added that he wishes more Americans would speak out against the trade war and President Donald Trump's recent comments about their northern neighbor.

"One of the reasons this is so damaging is that Canadians are in a nationalist mood and they're feeling insulted, and their American friends and relatives are brushing it off," he said. "That's not the response Canadians want."

Compass Points from PBS News analyzes prominent international affairs topics and America’s role in a shifting world, breaking down global conflicts, rising tensions, and their implications for U.S. interests. Visit the PBS News website to watch this week's episode.

Michigan health officials say fresh produce, including lettuce and other salad greens, has emerged as a possible source of a record US outbreak of Cyclospora infections. Investigators stress the source has not yet been confirmed, but the finding marks the most significant development in the investigation so far.

What exactly is Cyclospora? How does it contaminate food? Can washing fruit and vegetables remove it? Are frozen berries safe? And should people stop eating salads? Johns Hopkins epidemiologist Dr. Caitlin Rivers joins DW's The Day to explain how the parasite spreads, why outbreaks happen, and what consumers should do while investigators search for the source.

Six months after the United States and Israel launched military action against Iran, the conflict shows no sign of coming to an end.

As Washington turns its focus to economic pressure, Tehran remains defiant - with the Strait of Hormuz seen as key leverage.

The uncertainty keeps economies and markets volatile, pushing up prices around the world and straining international relations.

A conflict that US President Donald Trump said would last a few weeks has now lasted half a year, so where do we go from here and when might the war end?

A US Marine has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman's body was found in a hotel in Okinawa, Japan, according to local officials.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described the crime as a "brutal and heinous" robbery and murder. She said she had urged the US to "enforce stricter discipline" of its personnel.

Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said the woman's body was discovered early Saturday morning in a hotel in Naha City, the capital of Okinawa, an island chain south of the country's mainland.

"We are actively cooperating with Japanese authorities, in response to allegations of serious criminal actions by a Marine," the US Marine Corps said on social media, extending condolences to the victim's family.

Saudi Arabia and the US have carried out strikes against Iran-backed militias in Iraq, in a potential escalation of the Middle East conflict.

US Central Command said the strikes were against "Iran-aligned terrorists that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps directed to attack US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure".

Iraq's paramilitary Popular Mobilisation Forces, which is dominated by Iran-backed Shia militias, said at least 20 of its members had been killed in US-Saudi strikes on its bases.

It came hours after Centcom said Iran had launched missiles at US forces in the Middle East in an "attempted surprise attack", ending a lull in hostilities.

The cost of the war in Iran has hit nearly $1 billion a day as the U.S. has blown through weapons. Our national security correspondent Eric Schmitt explains what to know about those costs and why some officials are concerned that the Pentagon’s rush to rearm its Mideast forces makes it less ready to confront potential adversaries like Russia and China.

Whether it's reporting on conflicts abroad and political divisions at home, or covering the latest style trends and scientific developments, New York Times video journalists provide a revealing and unforgettable view of the world. It's all the news that's fit to watch.

Iconic country musician Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, her family announced on her social media.

"Sadness lies with us, not with Dolly," Parton's nephew Brian Seaver said in a video announcement.

In a seven-decade career, Parton won 10 Grammy awards, sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and wrote in excess of 3,000 songs.

Parton took her writing seriously, and considered herself a songwriter over everything else. "It's my way of expressing myself," she said. "It's my therapy."

She was also a savvy businesswoman who wasn't afraid to make tough decisions. Armed with a quick wit and southern charm, she took control of her show business career that spanned more than 60 years.
