United States Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle testifies before the House Oversight Committee on Monday that her agency “failed” its mission during the attempted assassination of Donald Trump earlier this month.
“The Secret Service’s solemn mission is to protect our nation’s leaders. On July 13th, we failed,” the director is expected to tell lawmakers, according to prepared remarks reviewed by CNN. “As the Director of the United States Secret Service, I take full responsibility for any security lapse.”
The agency, Cheatle is expected to say, “must learn what happened and I will move heaven and earth to ensure an incident like July 13th does not happen again. Thinking about what we should have done differently is never far from my thoughts.”

In her testimony – alone and under subpoena – Cheatle will be forced to provide many answers to what is essentially a single question: How did the Secret Service’s biggest failure in four decades happen under her watch?
In the days following the attempted assassination, Cheatle has done no press conferences and very few interviews. Monday’s hearing will mark the first opportunity for a lengthy dive into the security failures at Trump’s July 13 rally.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer on Sunday promised the hearing would be extensive and detailed.

Cheatle is “going to have about a six-hour hearing, and she’s going to have hundreds of questions that she’s going to have to answer,” Comer said on “Fox News Sunday.”

In his opening statement Monday, released before the hearing, Comer said Cheatle should resign and noted that so far, she has refused to do so.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said a 60-day timeline for a finalized, internal U.S. Secret Service investigation is not acceptable, echoing other lawmakers’ frustrations at the lack of answers provided at a congressional hearing into the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

The New York Democrat questioned Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle in a House Oversight hearing Monday about the attempted assassination of Trump at a July 13 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“The public deserves to have full confidence, and the stakes are too high,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “The violence that could break out in this political moment, regardless of party, in the event of someone getting hurt, constitutes a national security threat to the entire country.”

Cheatle stressed to lawmakers that she wasn’t “waiting for a report to take action.”

The director said the agency has been adding additional features to its security detail since the shooting.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., told Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle that her response that she had “no idea” how her opening statement for today’s House Oversight Committee hearing on the Trump rally shooting got leaked to media agencies is “bulls---.”

“Would you say leaking your opening statement... several hours before you sent it to this committee as being political? Yes or no?” Mace asked Cheatle.

“I have no idea how my statement got out,” Cheatle responded.

“Well, that’s bulls---,” Mace replied, before mentioning news articles published between 5 and 7 a.m. ET, three hours before she said the House Oversight Committee received Cheatle's statement.

In other questioning from Mace, Cheatle responded “yes” when asked if the Trump rally shooting was a “colossal failure” and could have been prevented.

“Have you provided all audio and video recordings in your possession to this committee, as we asked on July 15th? Yes or no?” Mace said at one point.

“I would have to get back to you,” Cheatle responded.

“That is a no. You're full of s-- today. You're just being completely dishonest,” Mace told Cheatle.
Organizers for Trump’s campaign asked to use the site in Butler on July 3 before Secret Service agents showed up to scan the area on July 8, Ken Laughlin said to the newspaper.

"It just seemed like an awful quick turn around,” he said.

Trump's rally was supposed to be held at the Butler County Airport -- but the airport was already booked out for July 13 for the Penn Township Volunteer Fire Company’s annual Mega Cruise car show, according to Stephanie Saracco, the Butler County Airport Manager.

Trump held a rally at the airport on October 31, 2020 as President.

Former Department of Defense counterterrorism analyst Kara Frederick said on the 'The Faulkner Focus' Friday that the House hearing next week with the Secret Service’s director “should give us a lot of answers” surrounding the investigation of Trump rally shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks.

The House Oversight Committe is set to question Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on Monday.

The hearing comes after Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., said members of Congress were told this week that Crooks had three encrypted accounts on overseas platforms.

“As something I did for almost ten years with the government and then with a big tech company, what you do is you can extract data from these platforms,” Frederick said. “You can figure out who were these platforms that he was supposedly using – even if they were encrypted – who was he talking to, what are his IP addresses, can you geolocate him to those physical locations... was he using aliases?”

“There are people who are in the government – even who are outside of the government – who can work to exploit that information that those accounts would convey,” she added.
The House Committee On Oversight and Accountability has scheduled a hearing for Monday with Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, who is facing criticism and calls to resign from lawmakers over her agency's handling of the Trump rally shooting last weekend in Pennsylvania.

The hearing, titled "Oversight of the U.S. Secret Service and the Attempted Assassination of President Donald J. Trump," is set to unfold on Capitol Hill beginning at 10 a.m. ET Monday.

Cheatle is refusing to resign, but House Speaker Mike Johnston told FOX Business on Thursday that he is prepared to call on President Biden to fire her.

“Continuity of operations is paramount during a critical incident and U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has no intentions to step down. She deeply respects members of Congress and is fiercely committed to transparency in leading the Secret Service through the internal investigation and strengthening the agency through lessons learned in these important internal and external reviews,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement late Wednesday.

Cheatle was confronted by senators who were demanding answers when she showed up at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee this week.

Secret Service Director Kimberley Cheatle faced a grilling by lawmakers on the Trump assassination attempt hearing. In her first congressional hearing over the July 13 assassination attempt, Cheatle repeatedly angered lawmakers by evading questions, citing ongoing investigations. In the past several days, Musk has continued to post right-wing and pro-Trump memes. Following Joe Biden stepping down, Musk retweeted former Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy saying, “We’re not running against a candidate. We’re running against a system.” Musk has also attacked Harris more directly. “Democrats destroy democracy in pursuit of power,” a QAnon-linked influencer wrote with Biden’s resignation letter attached. “The Democratic elite, corporate media, and billionaire donors successfully pressured the candidate chosen by Democratic primary voters to drop out because he’s down in the polls and losing.” On Sunday, Musk also tweeted out a video of Harris saying her pronouns and describing her appearance for accessibility and captioned the post, “Imagine 4 years of this…”
