Israel's military scoured the country's south for Hamas fighters and guarded breaches in its border fence with tanks on Monday, as it pounded the Gaza Strip from the air and mustered for a campaign its prime minister said would destroy “the military and governing capabilities” of the militant group.

More than two days after Hamas launched its unprecedented incursion from Gaza, the military said the fighting had largely died down for now. The attack caught Israel's vaunted military and intelligence apparatus completely off guard, bringing heavy battles to its streets for the first time in decades.

Officers ran out of their armoured vehicle under fire from Hamas gunmen. And approached a tank with wounded Israeli soldiers inside. As bullets pinged off the tank, they helped their comrades to safety. They killed several terrorists and got the soldiers to hospital. Kibbutz Nir Am was attacked by Hamas and other terrorists on Saturday, As part of a huge assault on Israel that left at least 900 dead, mostly civilians. Gunmen took control of at least 22 villages and towns. But not Kibbutz Nir Am, after IDF soldiers managed to drive them away.

That attack came a day after the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the 1973 Yom Kippur War. In Israel, more than 900 people have been killed, authorities said. Palestinian authorities said at least 765 people have been killed in Gaza.

Dozens of civilians, including the elderly, women and children, are being held hostage in Gaza, according to Israel Defense Forces and Israeli media. A militant group in Gaza says it is holding Israeli soldiers captive. A spokesman for Hamas’s military arm said on Monday that if Israel conducted attacks “without prior warning” on people in Gaza, captured Israeli civilians would be executed. The threat came after Israel announced a siege of Gaza earlier the same day.

A 27-year-old Israeli woman was killed “execution style” while playing dead in hopes of being spared by Hamas gunmen who invaded a trance music festival near the border with the Gaza Strip and massacred scores of partygoers on Saturday.

Ma’ayan Adam, 36, a television host who appeared on Israel’s version of “Dancing With The Stars” and anchors a news program on one of the country’s popular TV stations, posted a heartbreaking message to her 300,000 Instagram followers announcing the death of her 27-year-old sister, Mapal Adam.

According to her sister, Mapal Adam was killed while being held by her boyfriend, who suffered gunshot wounds to the back.

He is reportedly expected to survive.

“On Saturday afternoon, in this idyllic setting, Mapal, our baby, hid underneath a truck and pretended as if she were dead,” Ma’ayan Adam wrote in a message on Instagram that included a photo of her sister’s cell phone.

Hamas has released footage of its multi-pronged assault on Israel, which combined watchtower bombings, rockets and power gliders to catch Israel's military completely off guard.

The footage shows Hamas bombing a number of watchtower and Israeli defence sites along the border, followed up with hundreds of rockets to sow chaos.

Hamas gunmen in motorised paragliders then flew into southern Israel amid the confusion, with some reaching a nearby rave party where they massacred at least 250 people.

At the same time, other Hamas squads were working to smash through weak points in the Israel-Gaza border fence before pouring through to the other side to commit further massacres.

The footage shows bulldozers ploughing through the fence, followed by fighters on foot armed with what appear to be RPGs and also gunmen on mopeds.

Hundreds of Hamas gunmen are believed to have come through those breaches in the fence, which remain open and were still being used to launch assaults on Monday morning.
