The "Correctional Institution for Women" is the oldest and largest women's prison in the Philippines, founded in nineteen thirty-one. Designed for one thousand PDLs - "persons deprived of liberty" - today there are about three times as many. Prisoners range from petty criminals to drug dealers, from murderers to gang members. The guards are outnumbered. Your best bet at keeping prisoners under control: Strict rules that everyone must adhere to. Over and over again there are checks, to ensure no one has managed to escape. One hundred percent security is impossible! The inmates are allowed to deal with tools, gas-cannisters and knives. All potentially lethal weapons.

"The bedrooms and living quarters, the so-called "dorms", are spread over several buildings. Among the inmates are also so-called ‚High Value‘ PDL's‘. A huge compound, full of hardened criminals. In a jail where just a few dozen correction officers watch over several thousand prisoners, who roam freely during the day. For keeping control, the guards even work together with privileged inmates, that are allowed to punish the other ones.

This episode of Behind Bars tells not only his story, but also that of the inmates, and the environment of the prison and shows in impressive pictures how life behind bars works.

Fried chicken is so popular that the Philippines even have its own fried chicken brand. It’s also a dream food that some poor Filipinos can’t afford in real life.

Low-income earners can only eat chicken bones with bits of meat left. This kind of food from organic waste is called in Tagalog “Pagpag”.

Even if it is not hygienic and dangerous to health, it’s the only way to survive for many poor people in the slums of the Philippines.

Today we’re going on an ultimate pig tour to eat the best lechon in the Philippines - maybe the entire world! It’s going to be a day of crispy skin, juicy pork, and the action is going to be insane!

Here are all the places we went in this Philippines street food tour:

Gogoes Lechon (https://goo.gl/maps/dkhyaPNKmyEjjwhu5) - First up is Gogoes lechon located north of Cebu. We arrived at 5 am to see the process of them roasting their lechon. They fill up the belly of the pig with sea salt and a combination of spices that includes ginger and especially green onions. The pigs roast for 3 - 4 hours, carefully being turned as they roast so the skin cooks and crispfies perfectly. It was sensational and a perfect way to start this ultimate Filipino lechon tour. (Price - they wouldn’t charge us)

Ruthy's Lechon (https://goo.gl/maps/mCwqJYFZiv73MgYQ7) - Next up we headed to Talisay, known as the birthplace of lechon, and where the original lechoneros come from. Stanly first took me to Ruthy’s one of the standards of lechon - packed and they fly through the pigs. We chopped up a 3 kilo belly section of the pig. The skin was insanely crispy, salty, and full of juicy green onions. Price - 2,940 pesos

Lolo Soy's Lechon House - Finally, one of the greatest lechon’s in all of the Philippines, Lolo Soy's Lechon House. They fly through pigs and they had already sold over 20 pigs by the time we arrived. The action is out of control! We ordered a kilo and they also gave us some of the feet, plus some of the blood stew. Price - 750 per kg, we had 1 kg

Paraz Native Lechon (https://goo.gl/maps/iTpyTW6znqGsyp7J8) - For our last stop on this ultimate Filipino lechon tour we drove down to Carcar, another famous lechon city. We went to Paraz Native Lechon where they sell over 50 pigs a day, and they use native natural pigs. The pigs are still roasted over coals using traditional bamboo skewers. They chop it up, it’s so insanely juicy and then they drizzle on the drippings with all the onions. Additionally, they are known for their chili vinegar, which is some of the best you’ll have anywhere.

This was one of the greatest days of eating pig in my lechon, Cebu lechon really is the king of roast pig!

In the remote coastal communities of the Southern Philippines, illegal economies and practices are fueling environmental conflict and threatening one of the world’s most unique and endangered marine ecosystems.

Porous sea borders and weak governance coupled with rising economic hardship are pushing more and more people into an underworld that is profiting from the riches of the sea. An extensive criminal network is exploiting vulnerable coastal communities through illegal activities such as the smuggling of endangered wildlife and subaquatic gold mining. However, on Palawan Island, former fishermen have created their own PARA Enforcers unit which sets out to patrol and confront illegal fishing crews which are a vital part of the supply chain for wildlife traffickers. Led by Efren Balladeres, the group which is staffed by volunteers risk their lives to catch fishers in the act. But with huge profits being generated from cross border wildlife smuggling, the work of Efren’s team is becoming increasingly dangerous.

In southern Leyte, an environmental conflict left over from the country’s colonial legacy is destroying the coastline. Subaquatic gold mining is practised by most men of working age in the impoverished town of Pinut-an. Many of the divers who were once fishermen now mine gold on the seabed floor because there are no more fish left in the region. This underwater El Dorado poses many hazards. Miners risk death as they free dive to as deep as 60 feet to plunder boulders and rocks in underwater tunnel systems in search of the precious metal. Due to its archipelagic formation, the Philippines remains difficult for authorities to achieve complete surveillance over its far reaching southern provinces. In the remote region of Tawi Tawi, the final gateway before the sea border with Malaysia, the Marines and Maritime Police are struggling to close the smuggling and trafficking corridors that flow through the area to reach international waters.

With unfiltered access, this film delves into the hidden corners of the sea in areas of the Philippines off the well trodden path of tourists and visitors. As competition for resources on land intensifies, more and more people are turning to the sea with exploits which are harder to police and trace. This film will offer audiences a rare glimpse into this last untamed frontier at a critical time when our seas are in the greatest need of protection.
