Survivors of a music festival in Re’im, Israel, described scenes of chaos and fear as Hamas gunmen attacked just after dawn on Saturday.

One young Israeli man who survived the massacre at the celebration of “friends, love and peace”, 30-year-old Sahar Ben Sela, cried for his friends as he described the harrowing scene when Hamas militants stormed the festival with automatic guns, grenades, RPGs and other weapons.

Saturday’s attack was part of an unprecedented attack on Israel, the deadliest in decades. More than 260 bodies were recovered from the festival and at least 800 Israelis have been killed. Israeli air strikes have killed more than 500 people, including 20 children.

Another survivor, Elad Hakim, said the party turned from heaven to hell in a matter of seconds.

Hakim said he and his friends quickly realized they should escape but found Hamas militants armed with rifles awaiting them on the roads and in a nearby army base where they tried to find refuge.

After staying in a safe room in the base for 12 hours, they were finally able to make their way back to central Israel, only to find hundreds of burned and damaged cars abandoned on the side of Israeli roads.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan condemned Israel's response to Hamas' attack by bombing cities in Gaza -- which has destroyed infrastructure, cut off humanitarian supplies and killed civilians.

"Managing a conflict using every sort of embarrassing method - is not a war, it is a massacre," he said.

Speaking to his ruling AK Party in parliament, Erdogan said Israel's actions were the "reflex of an organization and not a state," adding that it would be treated as such if those actions continued.

Turkey, which has backed Palestinians in the past and hosted members of Hamas, has been working to mend its ties with Israel after years of animosity. Unlike the European Union and the United States, Ankara does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization.

Meanwhile, Jordan's King Abdullah said that no peace was possible in the Middle East without the emergence of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

A spokesperson for the ZAKA, a volunteer group that handles dead bodies and human remains after terror attacks, told Hebrew media that more than 600 Israelis have been killed, most are reported to be civilians. More than 2,000 people are reported to have been injured.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) released the names of 44 fallen soldiers today.

In Gaza, the health ministry said 313 people had been killed, including 20 children, with almost 2,000 injured.

The fighting is still raging on, more than 36 hours after the Hamas multi-faceted attack, at several locations across the south of Israel.

A military spokesperson said the death toll from the Hamas attacks had climbed to 900, mostly civilians gunned down in their homes, on the streets or at a dance party, dwarfing the scale of any past attack by Islamists apart from 9/11. Scores of Israelis were taken to Gaza as hostages, with some paraded through the streets.

Israel pounded the Gaza Strip on Tuesday (October 10) with the fiercest air strikes in its 75-year conflict with the Palestinians, razing whole districts to dust despite a threat from Hamas militants to execute a captive for each home hit.

Gaza's health ministry said Israel's retaliatory strikes had killed at least 770 people and wounded more than 4,000.
