Thailand surprised me in a way I didn’t expect.

Instead of city lights and night markets, I found myself on a three-day jungle trek in the mountains — soaked in rain, exhausted, and questioning my decision almost immediately. What started as something that felt overwhelming slowly turned into one of my favorite memories from this trip.

We hiked through rice fields and small villages, learned about local farming and coffee plants, swam in waterfalls, slept in a simple mountain hut, and experienced a completely different rhythm of life. By the end, what felt like a mistake became something meaningful.

We also visited an ethical elephant sanctuary and went bamboo rafting before heading back to the city — a contrast that made this experience even more special.

MANILA — Senate President Pro Tempore and Blue Ribbon Committee Chair Panfilo “Ping” Lacson silenced skeptics and hijackers “who exploit the vulnerabilities and anger of our people” amid the ongoing investigation in the multi-billion peso flood control corruption scandal. “As the chairman of this committee, I say to you, shut the f up,” Lacson said as the Blue Ribbon Committee hearing on the issue began Monday afternoon.
Watch the livestream of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing, January, 2026, as it resumes its investigation into alleged anomalies in government flood control projects. Senators grill officials regarding the delayed implementation and utilization of funds for flood mitigation.
Today’s hearing will tackle allegations that former public works secretary Manuel Bonoan sent incorrect grid coordinates to Malacañang, which led inspection teams to tag hundreds of projects as nonexistent. THE Senate Blue Ribbon Committee will begin examining documents left behind by the late Public Works undersecretary Catalina Cabral when it resumes hearings on the flood control bribery scandal Monday, Jan. 19.
Sen. Panfilo Lacson, who chairs the committee, said the panel will ask officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to authenticate the documents now known as the “Cabral files,” copies of which are reportedly in the possession of Lacson and others.
While former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary Manuel Bonoan has already arrived in Manila on Sunday, Jan. 18, Senate President Pro Tempore and Blue Ribbon committee chairman Panfilo Lacson has yet to confirm whether the embattled former official would attend the hearing.
Today’s hearing will tackle allegations that Bonoan sent incorrect grid coordinates to Malacañang, which led inspection teams to tag hundreds of projects as nonexistent, inflating initial reports and raising questions about accountability within the DPWH.
