Post-pandemic travel has returned with a vengeance, with tourist numbers breaking records in many territories. Yet, one country in Southeast Asia lags its neighbours - The Philippines. In 2024, 5.9 million tourists visited the Philippines, well below pre-pandemic levels of 8.3 million. In the first quarter of this year, foreign arrival numbers are 27% below pre-COVID figures for the same period. Despite being blessed with natural beauty and a welcoming culture, why does the Philippines underperform when it comes to tourism? It is a question that Filipinos are asking themselves, as a viral social media thread earlier this year sparked a debate on why the country ranks so low on travellers' wish-lists. How much does this unfulfilled potential cost the Philippines, and what is the country doing to entice visitors to come? With the recent deterioration of relations with China leading to a shrinking number of Chinese travellers, what other markets will the Philippines pursue?

Rodrigo Duterte Hearing LIVE Day 2 | ICC Hearing Ex-Philippine President's Case| Duterte News | CNBC TV18
The International Criminal Court is holding a crucial hearing to decide whether former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte should stand trial for alleged crimes against humanity linked to his controversial “war on drugs.”
Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court told judges on Monday that former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte encouraged death squads to carry out extrajudicial killings using fear and financial rewards.
The court in The Hague is holding pretrial hearings for the ex-leader, who is facing three counts of crimes against humanity for deadly anti-drugs crackdowns he oversaw while in office.
According to prosecutors, police and hit squad members carried out dozens of murders at Duterte's behest, motivated by the promise of money or to avoid becoming targets themselves. “For some, killing reached the level of a perverse form of competition,” deputy prosecutor Mame Mandiaye Niang said in his opening statement.
Duterte “stands behind his legacy resolutely, and he maintains his innocence absolutely,” lead defense lawyer Nick Kaufman told the three-judge panel. According to Kaufman, the prosecution “cherry-picked” examples of Duterte “bombastic rhetoric," and his client's words were never intended to incite violence.
Duterte, 80, was not present in the courtroom, having waived his right to appear. Last month, judges found he was fit to stand trial, after postponing an earlier hearing over concerns about his health.

I moved to the Philippines in 2023 with $115,000 in savings, confident I could make it work. Two years later, I was broke. This is the brutally honest story of how I lost everything - the relationships, the lifestyle inflation, the travel, the going out, and all the financial mistakes I made as a new expat. If you're thinking about moving to the Philippines or you're already here struggling financially, learn from my mistakes so you don't repeat them.

🎯 TIMESTAMPS:
1:13 - INTRODUCTION
3:20 - THE SETUP - WHERE I STARTED
5:44 - THE FIRST BIG EXPENSE - CHASING LOVE
9:56 - THE PATTERN CONTINUES - DAVAO TO CEBU
18:03 - THE OTHER EXPENSES - WHERE THE MONEY REALLY WENT
21:18 - THE WAKE-UP CALL - REALIZING I WAS BROKE
23:55 - THE PIVOT - HOW YOUTUBE SAVED ME
28:06 - THE LESSONS I LEARNED
32:38 - WHERE I AM NOW

💡 What I Learned:
The cost of living in the Philippines CAN be cheap - but only if you're disciplined. Relationships, lifestyle choices, and saying "yes" to everything drained my savings faster than I ever imagined. This video isn't about regret - it's about sharing what I learned so you can avoid the same mistakes.

The waves were non stop, my seasickness made me "suka" twice, but seven hours later... it was all worth it!

WELCOME TO CALAYAN ISLAND.

This island is one of some of the most remote islands here in Northern Luzon. If you don't take the small plane, the journey can be difficult... but as you will see in this video... certainly worth it! I took the boat for about 7 hours to the main island of Calayan. After connecting with the local community and exploring the town, I found myself hiking with a guide along some of the most powerful coastlines you can experience in the Philippines. There is an incredible beach cove as well called "Sibang"... which has powdery white sand, and stunning turquoise waters!

These remote islands in Luzon are certainly incredible...

I look forward to sharing this raw adventures series with you.

Video:
So Philippines is a good contender to be called the Poland of Asia because it was first colonized by the Spanish for 333 years, then passed to the USA and then it was taken by the Japanese Empire in WW2, which makes Philippines highly considerable to be called the Poland of Asia. But here's the deal, to be Poland you have to be independent first and then lose your whole territory to the other countries. While Philippines didn't even exist as a sole country before the Spanish Empire colonized them, Philippines was just distributed among small principalities. Which neglects the Idea of Philippines being the Poland of Asia.

In this ultimate Philippines food documentary, we’re traveling across the lesser visited southern island of Mindanao in search of the best local food. From the busy street food stalls of Cagayan De Oro to the rich culture of Marawi City, the unique Filipino food in Zamboanga, and the tuna of Davao City and General Santos City, this is going to be an unforgettable journey into Filipino food.

Huge thank you to Chui: @TheChuiShow For helping to arrange this entire trip!

Cagayan De Oro - Our food tour starts in the busy city of Cagayan de Oro, known locally as CDO. The market is full of delicious Filipino street food and friendly people. We’ll try a local stall famous for their humba, and get a taste of delicious Halal Maranao food. Next we’re trying the raw marinated fish (kinilaw) and tasting a powerful unforgettable soup!

Marawi City - Marawi City is home to the Maranao People, an ethnic people group native to this region of Mindanao. Their food is outstanding, some of the best food I’ve had in the Philippines - loaded with spices and fresh herbs.

Zamboanga City - From Marawi City, we made our way, continuing with our ultimate Philippines street food tour to Zamboanga City, one of the most unique and fascinating cities in the Philippines with its mix of Spanish cultures. The food is outstanding as you would expect, with a mix of local Sulu island flavors and dishes like huge crabs in Alavar sauce - which you don’t want to miss.

General Santos City - Next up we head to General Santos City, the tuna capital of the Philippines and home to Manny Pacquiao! We visited the tuna auction, which is incredible to see, tried some local balbacua, ate at Manny Pacquiao’s favorite local spot, and then had one of the greatest tuna and marlin bbq meals ever.

Davao City - It would not be a complete Philippines street food tour in Mindanao without going to Davao City, the capital and biggest city in Mindanao. Their soups are incredible and we tried a huge variety of some of the tastiest and most legendary Filipino food. Also a highlight is Davao durian, and if you love durian, welcome to durian paradise!

A huge thank you to all my local friends in the Philippines for your amazing support and taking me around!

This is the story of how a lonely delivery driver from Detroit became another statistic in the Philippines retirement scam epidemic. No one forced him to wire the money. No one held a gun to his head. He did it all willingly, desperately, because he wanted so badly to believe that someone finally valued me.

In this video, he's sharing every painful detail: how he met his Filipina wife, Liza, how the requests started small and grew, how he ignored every warning sign, and how he ended up broke at 62 with nothing to show for three years except expensive lessons about trust, loneliness, and desperation.

🚨 What You'll Learn:
- How retirement scams targeting Western men actually work in the Philippines
- The exact progression from "girlfriend" to financial disaster
- Why I ignored obvious red flags (and how you can avoid doing the same)
- The real cost of building a house in the Philippines as a foreigner
- How monthly "allowances" can drain your retirement savings
- Why failed business ventures are a common part of these scams
- What happens when you run out of money and she's done with you
- How the U.S. Embassy handles broke Americans abroad (repatriation loans explained)
- What it's like starting over at 62 after losing everything
