NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Mel Tillis, the affable longtime country star who wrote hits for Kenny Rogers, Ricky Skaggs and many others, and overcame a stutter to sing on dozens of his own singles, has died. A spokesman for Tillis, Don Murry Grubbs, said Tillis died early Sunday at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Florida. He was 85. Grubbs said Tillis battled intestinal issues since 2016 and never fully recovered. The suspected cause of death is respiratory failure.
Joe Bugner vs James Tillis in a ten round non-title heavyweight bout

Date: September 15, 1986

Venue: Sydney Entertainment Centre, Sydney

Bugner stance: orthodox

Tillis stance: orthodox

Joe Bugner's UK-based comeback fizzled out when he lost a somewhat controversial split decision to Stefan Tangstad in Copenhagen. As Bugner had been slightly fortunate to win his previous fight against Anders Eklund, and had deservedly lost on points to Marvis Frazier, it was clear he had few boxing opportunities if he stayed in Britain. Bugner moved to Australia, and after less than 18 months out of the ring, it was time for his latest comeback at the age of 36.

James Tillis had challenged for the WBA title five years earlier, losing on points to Mike Weaver. His best wins were a seventh round stoppage of Ron Stander, and a points win over Earnie Shavers. Despite losing to all the other big names he faced, there were signs of improvement in 1986. His first bout of the year was against unbeaten Olympic champion Tyrell Biggs, and he gave a spirited effort while losing on points. In his next fight, he lost a close decision to Mike Tyson that some observers felt he won. Tillis then had two routine wins over journeymen before making the trip to Australia.

For an in depth look at their respective records, visit:

Joe Bugner - https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/000924

James Tillis - https://boxrec.com/en/box-pro/803

Church Street Station brings you the best live performances from all your country music favourites.
In this episode we have performances by: Mel Tillis and Leroy Van Dyke
Mel Tillis - Good Woman Blues (0:40)
Mel Tillis - I Got the Hoss (02:10)
Leroy Van Dyke - Walk on By (04:23)
Leroy Van Dyke - The Auctioneer (06:46)
Mel Tillis - Burning Memories (09:24)
Mel Tillis - Send Me Down To Tucson (11:34)
Mel Tillis - Rose of El Paso (13:34)
Mel Tillis - Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town (17:42)

Leroy Frank Van Dyke is an American country music singer best known for his hits "The Auctioneer" (1956) and "Walk On By" (1961).

Van Dyke was born in Mora, Missouri. He lived in Spencer, Wisconsin, and graduated from the University of Missouri majoring in agricultural journalism. He was catapulted into country music fame in 1956 with his composition "The Auctioneer", co-written with Buddy Black, which sold over 2.5 million records. He wrote the song about the life of his cousin, National Auctioneers Association Hall of Famer Ray Sims, also a Missourian. Van Dyke had the lead role of a budding country music performer in the 1967 movie What Am I Bid?, in which Sims played himself as an auctioneer.

In his 50 years-plus career, Van Dyke has recorded more than 500 songs, dozens of them making the charts. His record of "Walk On By" (1961) was named by Billboard magazine in 1994 as the biggest country single of all time, based on sales, plays and weeks in the charts.[citation needed] It stayed at number one in the U.S. country chart for 19 weeks, and in all, charted for 42 weeks, also reaching No. 5 on the pop listings. It sold more than 1.5 million copies.

In the UK Singles Chart Van Dyke had two hits: "Walk On By" reached No. 5 in February 1962, and "Big Man in a Big House" made No. 34 in May that year.

Lonnie Melvin "Mel" Tillis is an American country music singer and songwriter. Although he recorded songs since the late 1950s, his biggest success occurred in the 1970s, with a long list of Top 10 hits.

Tillis's biggest hits include "I Ain't Never", "Good Woman Blues", and "Coca-Cola Cowboy". On February 13, 2012, President Barack Obama awarded Tillis the National Medal of Arts for his contributions to country music. He also has won the CMA Awards' most coveted award, Entertainer of the Year. He is also known for his speech impediment, which does not affect his singing voice. His daughter is country music singer Pam Tillis.

This performance was recorded live at Church Street Station in Orlando, Florida.

When You Walk in the Room
I can see a new expression on my face
I can feel a strange sensation taking place
I can hear the guitars playing lovely tunes
Everytime that you walk in the room
I close my eyes for a second and pretend
It's me you want
Meanwhile I try to act so nonchalant
I see a summer night with a magic moon
Everytime that you walk in the room
Maybe it's a dream come true
Standing right along side of you
Wish I could show you how much I care
But I only have the nerve to stare
I can feel that something pounding in my brain
Just anytime that someone speaks your name
Trumpets sound and I hear thunder boom
Everytime that you, everytime that you
Everytime that you, walk in the room
Written by Jackie DeShannon.
