Die etwa 64,5 Millionen Bewohner sind zu 75 % Thai und zu etwa 15 % Chinesen; eine muslimische Minderheit, die Malayen, lebt in Südthailand. Der Buddhismus ist die dominierende Religion des Landes. Die Thai wanderten erst im 11. Jahrhundert in das heutige Thailand ein. Sie gründeten mehrere Königreiche, die in den folgenden Jahrhunderten vereinigt wurden. In der Epoche des Kolonialismus gelang es, die Unabhängigkeit zu wahren. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg wurde Thailand häufig vom Militär diktatorisch regiert, gleichzeitig erlebte es einen Wirtschaftsboom und entwickelte sich zu einem der wirtschaftlich führenden Staaten Südostasiens. Innenpolitische Auseinandersetzungen erschütterten die Gesellschaft in den vergangenen fünf Jahren wiederholt. In Südthailand ist separatistisch motivierte Gewalt an der Tagesordnung.
