It's been six months since the US launched its war with Iran. Donald Trump said it would be ‘over quickly’.

Instead, it has dragged on, with the military might of the US held at bay by a force a fraction of its size. The Strait of Hormuz remains at a near stand still, making oil prices volatile and, in turn, impacting the global economy.

Rising prices back home, embarrassing reports of dismal conditions for forces aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, and a failure to end the conflict quickly has helped the Iran war become the most unpopular in modern American history… and it has only taken six months.

In this episode of FourSight, we examine what's actually happened to Trump’s stated war aims: to reduce Iran's missile capabilities, end its nuclear programme, and force regime change. We ask what this war has cost America in military strength, regional alliances, and Trump's own approval ratings.

Is there any way the President or his so-called Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, can claim some kind of victory or will this foreign policy failure define Trump’s second-term in office?

US President Donald Trump has told the United Nations General Assembly he faces a "big decision" on whether to strike Iran again or pursue a peace deal.

A single member of Iran's delegation watched on during the president's speech in New York, in which he said he could "annihilate" the Islamic Republic if the conflict went unresolved.

Trump later told reporters that American officials had had a "very productive" three-hour meeting with the Iranian delegation on the sidelines of the general assembly.

Iran state TV confirmed that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had met US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, although there was no comment from officials in Tehran.

The US announced a host of sanctions against Iran and threatened its supporters in what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said was "the single greatest financial offensive ever".

Labelling it an "economic D-Day" for Iran, Bessent said the US would sever all economic ties with the country and added that any nation financially partnering with Iran would also be isolated.

However, the latest threat to the Iranian regime follows several U-turns and extended deadlines from the White House in its efforts to end the conflict.

The war has led to hikes in global oil prices, and in response to the latest threat Iran warned it would shut down all oil exports from the region if the war continued.

With President Donald Trump at record unpopularity, Republicans are facing an even bleaker midterm political landscape than they did eight years ago, a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS finds.

Nationally, voters say they prefer Democratic candidates over Republicans by an eight-point margin – slightly more modest than their 12-point advantage in CNN’s September polling ahead of the 2018 midterms in Trump’s first presidency.

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten and CNN political director David Chalian pore through the new numbers, plus reaction from CNN's Jake Tapper and Audie Cornish's CNN This Morning "group chat."

Leaked audio from a private fundraiser for young Republicans shows U.S. Vice-President JD Vance weighed in on a nearly finalized trade deal between Canada and the United States, casting Prime Minister Mark Carney as someone who tried to play hardball with Washington but was also a ‘very sweet guy.’

Audio of Vance’s remarks was originally provided to The Canadian Press by a source in attendance at the private function in Southampton, N.Y.

In a major diplomatic escalation following the conclusion of the joint U.S.-Israeli military campaign 'Operation Epic Fury,' U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has issued a bold warning to Iran's new Supreme Leader, outlining the Trump administration's aggressive next phase of geopolitical strategy. This comes alongside the Treasury Department's newly launched 'Operation Economic Outcast'—an unprecedented financial offensive spearheaded by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to completely isolate Tehran by targeting five vital sectors of its economy: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. Reaffirming Washington's stance after high-level discussions with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Secretary Rubio emphasized that the United States and its global partners remain fully committed to preserving the freedom of navigation in the critical Strait of Hormuz. While Rubio expressed a preference for the 'path of peace' and ongoing diplomatic channels brokered by Oman, he made it clear that President Donald Trump's ultimate goal remains the complete denuclearization of Iran. Warning that the Iranian regime must fundamentally change its behavior and stop exporting terror, Rubio declared that the U.S. will aggressively enforce secondary sanctions on third-country facilitators—including Chinese firms—and is prepared to pursue 'another way' if diplomatic negotiations fail to secure a certified agreement.
