Israel says it has reclaimed control of the southern part of the country after the deadly attacks by Hamas militants. It has also carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Gaza while Hamas has fired rockets into Israel, most of which have been intercepted by the Iron Dome. Hamas militants raid Israeli houses door-to-door armed with rocket launchers.

When the Awhazov family walked back to their house on Saturday morning after being called away to an air raid shelter they assumed the worst was over.

But shortly afterwards someone rang the doorbell of their home, in the southern Israeli town of Ofakim.

George Awhazov looked at the intercom screen and was confronted by two men in camouflage: one of them tugged at the door handle, the other, with a rocket launcher on his shoulder, looked around cautiously.

“I heard some noise outside and went to the intercom when I heard the doorbell. I looked at it and saw a guy with an RPG (rocket-propelled grenade launcher). The only time I ever saw an RPG was in computer games.”

The 23-year-old, wisely, did not open the door. He had come within a whisker of being kidnapped.

Over a dozen towns and villages in southern Israel were overrun by Hamas fighters on Saturday as they shot residents in the streets and grabbed others to take them to Gaza.

Sky News Australia host Sharri Markson says the most “horrific news imaginable” has emerged from the ongoing war between Israel and the Hamas terrorists.

According to Ms Markson, the Israeli Defence Force has discovered the bodies of 40 babies and young children.

“They'd been killed – some even beheaded,” she said.

“The shocking sight of beheaded young children with their heads cut off meant that the soldiers who found them and recovered their bodies were seen crying and comforting each other.

“There truly are no words to capture the evil, the cruelty that would lead these barbarians to take the lives of innocent tiny, beautiful babies.

“It is so evil that it's beyond comprehension, beyond belief.”

This video contains disturbing images | As the Israeli military showed the atrocities of the surprise attack by Hamas, many in southern Israel searched for safety — anxious about more violence.

Amber and I got a late start. We decided to try the Tomoka river for some great eating black drum.
We were using dead shrimp on the bottom along bridge posts to catch these delicious fish.

"Margot and her daddy, Jordan, are connected at the hip. Jordan has been a bass fisherman his whole life, so naturally, Margot is obsessed with anything fishing. They're always in the garage on the boat playing with fishing lures together and going on nature walks. We were fishing at a creek near our house when Jordan caught one and Margot wanted to hold it and show it some love. Her daddy teared up after she grabbed the fish like that cause he was so happy then he returned the fish back to the creek like always."
