President Donald Trump has issued a stunning ultimatum to NATO and other U.S. allies, declaring that the United States will no longer secure oil shipments from the Persian Gulf and urging them to 'go take your oil from Iran' themselves. The bombshell statement, delivered amid escalating US-Iran tensions, signals a dramatic shift in American foreign policy and questions the long-standing U.S. security umbrella in the Middle East. The President's remarks have sent shockwaves through global markets and diplomatic circles, raising concerns about the stability of international oil supplies, the future of the NATO alliance, and the potential for a wider military conflict in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Oil prices climbed Thursday on continued worries about global supply following a record number of tanker attacks that sent crossings through the Strait of Hormuz to a two-month low. Just seven tankers transited the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, less than half the seven-day average and the lowest number since July 23, preliminary data from Kpler showed.

Also, the United States moved all of its long-range bombers stationed in the United Kingdom back to their American home bases on Sunday after an unspecified new threat, officials said. It comes days after the British government arrested a number of individuals in connection with an alleged Iranian plot to target the UK airbase where the planes had been stationed.

And, Yemeni government forces claimed Monday to have retaken key positions near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a vital chokepoint for global trade, as they launch a renewed campaign to roll back recent gains made by the Iran-backed Houthi movement. This as the leader of the Houthis in Yemen has warned Saudi Arabia to prepare for a long conflict.

CNN talks to regional and military experts about this week’s developments.

The US carried out what it said was “self-defense” strikes in Iran over the weekend – as President Donald Trump sent back changes to a proposed deal to extend the existing ceasefire in the region and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have struck a US air base used to launch an attack on a telecommunications tower on Iran’s Sirik Island, according to a statement carried by several Iranian state-run news outlets.

CNN international diplomatic editor Nic Robertson breaks down a statement from Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghlaibaf. Also, CNN global affairs analyst Kim Dozier and CNN military analyst Cedric Leighton react to the latest strikes, while CNN’s Ben Hunte discusses the latest developments with Middle East analyst Sina Azodi.

Iran and the US have traded strikes after American forces attacked two rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz.

The first known US strikes on Iran since late July killed two people and injured two others, according to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which vowed "response and punishment".

US Central Command said it had taken "limited, precise action" against "minelaying forces posing an imminent threat in the Strait of Hormuz".

The head of the US Central Intelligence Agency has travelled to Moscow for secret, unnannounced talks, according to multiple sources in the United States

John Ratcliffe is understood to have arrived in the Russian capital. Neither Washington or Moscow have confirmed the nature of the visit or who he was due to meet.

In-person talks between high-level American and Russian officials are rare.

Flight tracking data confirmed a large US military aircraft travelled to Russia from the US via Latvia. Footage posted on social media showed the C-17 transport plane approaching Moscow's Vnukovo international airport.

It departed Riga airport at 05:50 GMT and appeared to have landed in the Russian capital at around 07:04 GMT, according to data from FlightRadar24. It returned to Riga shortly before 17:00 GMT.

Footage on social media also purported to show a diplomatic motorcade travelling through Moscow.

Ahead of the trip, the US told Ukraine that a senior delegation would be travelling to Moscow and asked Kyiv to suspend strikes until they had left, a senior Ukrainian official said.

Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Tom Bateman in Washington.
