ISRAËL - Les faits se sont déroulés au premier jour de la vaste attaque du Hamas sur le territoire israélien, samedi dernier, mais ils commencent seulement à être connus ce mardi 10 octobre.

Parmi les plus de 900 morts côté israélien au quatrième jour des frappes, combats et exactions, de nombreux cadavres ont été localisés au sein du kibboutz de Beeri, qui a vécu un massacre.

Des habitants de Beeri interrogés par l’AFP ont ainsi estimé que sur les 1 200 habitants du kibboutz situé à quatre kilomètres à vol d’oiseau de la frontière avec Gaza, des dizaines ont été tués ou pris en otage. Le journal The Times of Israël fait part d’une centaine de morts.

Israël a multiplié, dimanche 8 octobre 2023, des frappes aériennes sur la bande de Gaza au lendemain de l’attaque du Hamas contre son territoire.

Dimanche matin, l’Etat hébreu a également été visé, au nord, par des tirs de roquettes et d’obus du Hezbollah. Le groupe militaire libanais a déclaré avoir agi en solidarité avec « la résistance palestinienne ». Les forces israéliennes ont riposté par des frappes aériennes sur le sud du Liban, là où est parti un des tirs.

Israël a reconnu une prise d’otages « significative », comprenant civils et militaires israéliens, par des membres du Hamas. Leur nombre reste indéterminé mais l’ambassade de France en Israël parle d’au moins 150 Israéliens enlevés. Parmi eux, plusieurs jeunes adultes qui participaient au Tribe of Nova festival, dans le désert près de la bande de Gaza, au moment de l’assaut du Hamas.

Palestinian families in different areas in Gaza started fleeing their homes on Saturday morning (October 7) in fear of Israeli retaliation after the massive attack on Israel launched from the strip.

Terrorist group Hamas launched the biggest attack on Israel in years in a surprise assault that combined gunmen crossing the border with a heavy barrage of rockets from the Gaza Strip.

Israeli military had responded with air strikes into Gaza, where witnesses reported hearing heavy explosions and multiple dead being carried into hospitals.

Hamas has warned it will begin broadcasting the execution of hostages if Israel targets “innocent civilians" by continuing to bomb the Gaza Strip.

The terror group said it had taken “dozens” of soldiers hostage since Saturday's surprise attack on Israel where it launched thousands of rockets and conducted air and land attacks.

Israel responded to the attacks by Hamas with a “complete siege” on Gaza as it vowed to respond with a force “like never before”.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that retaliation attacks have “only just begun,” adding that this week’s events will change the Middle East landscape forever.

The death toll from both sides has now passed 1,500.

Israel declared war on Palestinian militant group Hamas on Sunday after its surprise incursion from Gaza. The three-day conflict has already claimed the lives of over 1,100 people on both sides, with more than 700 killed in Israel, including 44 soldiers.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Hamas’s offensive was the beginning of a "long and challenging war” and vowed to destroy the militant group’s hideouts. Meanwhile, in Gaza, which endured relentless Israeli airstrikes on Sunday, officials have reported at least 413 deaths.

Israel said it is now at war with Hamas and launched airstrikes in Gaza, vowing to inflict an “unprecedented price.”

Hamas militants were still fighting gunbattles inside several Israeli communities hours after the incursion began. Israel’s national rescue service said at least 70 people were killed and hundreds wounded, making it the deadliest attack in Israel in years. An unknown number of Israeli soldiers and civilians were also seized and taken into Gaza, an enormously sensitive issue for Israel.
