LIVE | US Midterms 2026: Democrats Gain In Trump Strongholds As Early Voting Trends Shift | N18G
Early voting trends ahead of the 2026 US midterm elections are drawing attention to a potential shift in voter enthusiasm, with Democrats making gains even in some of Donald Trump’s strongest Republican strongholds.
In Ohio, early voting figures show that the Republican advantage among early voters in counties Trump won by at least 20 percentage points in 2024 has narrowed sharply. At the same stage of the previous presidential election cycle, Republicans held a 30-percentage-point lead over Democrats in these counties. This time, that gap has shrunk to just five points, according to figures reported by CNN.
The broader trend could offer Democrats an encouraging sign as they look to challenge Republicans in crucial congressional races. Ohio is an important battleground in the fight for control of the US Senate, with the contest between Democrat Sherrod Brown and Republican Jon Husted attracting national attention.
But do early voting numbers signal a wider political shift? Not necessarily. Party affiliation among early voters does not reveal how individuals actually cast their ballots, and turnout patterns can change as Election Day approaches. The current figures represent an early snapshot rather than a definitive forecast.
