Red foxes, or Vulpes vulpes, are one of three species of foxes found in Wyoming. The other two species are the gray fox and swift fox. Although foxes are capable of producing a variety of vocal calls, scent marking is likely the most important form of communication. Red foxes have excellent hearing and can hear animals moving underground, which allows them to locate and capture their small mammal prey. It is said that their hearing is so sharp, red foxes can even hear a ticking watch from 40 yards away! Red foxes are seasonally monogamous, meaning they stay with the same mate throughout each breeding season, with both parents helping to feed and care for the young. It is likely that this individual is calling either to its mate or their pups, which may just be starting to emerge from the den.
